Good growth in Tunisia in 2017, in any case better than in 2016, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, believes in it.
She affirmed it Wednesday 18 January 2017, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, after a meeting with Tunisian Prime Minister Youssef Chahed.
Commenting on the meeting, Mrs. Lagarde said it focused on the prospects of the growth of the Tunisian economy. “The outlook for growth is better in 2017 than in 2016,” she said.
According to her, the fact that there are positive signals in certain key sectors gives reason to hope for an improvement. “Phosphate is the typical example of the sector where production was very consistent in the last quarter of 2016 and it is hoped that the pace will be maintained”.
The reforms to be carried out in Tunisia were also among the topics discussed by the IMF chief and Chahed. “We discussed the important reforms undertaken to revive the Tunisian economy and to enable Tunisians to benefit from the potential of their economy,” Lagarde said.
However, she pointed to the scale of the task: “there are big efforts to make in the face of the difficult reforms, because it is always difficult to reform”.
