International, Arab Envoys Meet in Cairo to Discuss Libya’s Situation

Representatives from the United Nations, the European Union, the Arab League and the African Union met on Saturday in the Egyptian capital of Cairo to intensify international efforts in order to push the peace process in Libya.

EU High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, UN Special Envoy for Libya Martin Kobler, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and AU High Representative for Libya Jakaya Kikwete met at the headquarters of the pan-Arab organization in Cairo.

The four-party meeting aims to find the necessary means to convince the different factions of the Libyan conflict to reach a political agreement and end fighting.

On March 7, Aboul Gheit announced that this meeting aims to give a boost to the efforts exerted by Libya’s neighbors, particularly Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria, to end the conflict.

Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria have doubled their efforts in an attempt to control their borders with Libya due to chaos spread in the Arab country, where several sides are vying for power.

Political mayhem in Libya led to the infiltration of extremist groups such as Ansar al-Sharia, the Islamic State terror organization and al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, which in turn boosted illegal trafficking of weapons and people.
