Tunisia ranked 77th while Morocco adnvances by ranking 72nd out of 128 countries in the “The Global Innovation Index 2016: Winning with global innovation” (GII) published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Released every year since 2007, the report is designed to assess the capacities and performances of countries in terms of innovation to provide policymakers, business executives stakeholders with an overview of the condition of innovation around the globe.
GII ranks countries on their capacity for innovation, on the basis of institutional services, human resources, scientific research, market sophistication, business environment, academic performance, and infrastructure.
Morocco ranked 72nd, ahead of Tunisia (77th), Egypt (107th), and Algeria (113rd). The kingdom also occupied the 12th position in the North African and West Asian region (NAWA).
The report highlighted that Morocco’s economy “outperformed its income group on at least four of the seven GII pillars.”
It also added that if 2016’s trends continue into 2017, Morocco would become one of the “innovation achievers” in the following year’s report.
In total, 16 of the 19 economies in the NAWA region are in the top 100 of this ranking, such as Qatar (50th), Bahrain (57th), Armenia (60th), Georgia (64th), Kuwait (67th), Lebanon (70th), Morocco, Oman (73rd) , Tunisia, and Jordan (82nd).
“Innovation has increasingly a global character, in that economic agents from different countries are involved, and we want to emphasize that this is a positive thing; this allows the benefits of innovation to be shared, and the capacity for innovation to be augmented through these collaborations,” explained noted WIPO Director General Francis Gurry.
