commemoration of 17th anniversary of Leader Habib Bourguiba’s death

A ceremony was held Thursday in Monastir, on the 17th anniversary of leader Habib Bourguiba’s death.

The ceremony, organised at the Bourguiba family’s Square, was attended by President Beji Caid Essebsi and House of People’s Representatives (HPR) Speaker Mohamed Ennaceur.

Were also present, The Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Transport and of Education, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) and several MPs.

Relatives of the late leader as well as several activists and former resistance fighters were also there.

Several Tunisians have not missed this annual meeting and joined the commemoration ceremony.

“The massive participation of Tunisians in this annual event is a clear message to all those who question the activism and the career of leader Habib Bourguiba,” said the President of the Republic.

“Those lack experience and ignore the history of their country and I advise them to appeal to their conscience and to tell the truth to the next generations,” he pointed out.

“Habib Bourguiba is a model to follow. He donated himself to serve Tunisia and its cause,” Caid Essebsi underlined.

“He fought a victorious battle, built the modern State, generalised education and health and liberated women,” he recalled.

“Today, fight against illiteracy is no longer a priority of the government which is now seeking to create jobs for higher education graduates,” he added.

“This is why the generalisation of education remains one of the most important achievements of Bourguiba,” he said.

“The leader Habib Bourguiba will be etched forever in the memory of the Tunisian people, for he was a loyal, integral and militant man and we are grateful to him,” the Head of State Essebsi specified.

During this commemoration ceremony, Beji Caïd Essebsi laid a wreath at the foot of the late leader’s mausoleum and recited the Fatiha in his memory.

The President of the Republic kicked off, on the occasion, the construction works of the Monastir lawyer house, named after Habib Bourguiba.

During his visit in Monastir, Beji Caid Essebsi laid the foundation stone of the construction project of a new multimodal transport station in the region.

Upon his arrival to the Monastir Habib Bourguiba airport, the President was presented with the key of the city by the president of the Monastir municipality’s special delegation
