Tunisia Tourism Gets Boost as UK Lifts Two-Year Travel Ban

About 3.5 million tourists have visited Tunisia up to July, said Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Selma Elloumi Rekik.

Tunisia managed to recover traditional markets, such as France.

The lifting by the UK of the Tunisia travel ban was also behind tour operators considering the relaunch of programmes, the Minister said as she paid a visit to Mahdia. Tunisia needs to open onto new markets, such as the Gulf region and China, she indicated.

Tourist attraction and cultural activities are of crucial importance for these untapped markets which requires the diversification of the tourism product; cultural tourist routes including festivals as well as the promotion of handicrafts and the culinary heritage are at the heart of such a renewal, she further said.

A promotional portal of the Tunisian tourism was launched in nine languages; it sheds light on events and festivals and provides daily updates, the Minister announced.

The number of visitors to the governorate of Mahdia edged up 31% on the same period last year; likewise, the number of overnight stays was up 50%. Hotel occupancy rate exceeded 100% rising to 11,200 against an accommodation capacity of 10,600 beds .

The number of French tourists in Mahdia increased 160% ; they are on top of the list of overseas visitors. Domestic tourism is up 42% , while the Russian and German markets posted a 25% rise.
