In talks held in the Tunisian capital, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela and Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs Khemaies Jhinaoui discussed ways to enhance bilateral political and economic relations. The ministers held their bilateral talks on Wednesday 8 November 2017, on the sidelines of a two-day official visit to the Republic of Tunisia by the President of Malta Marie Louise Coleiro-Preca to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations.

Minister Abela and Minister Jhinaoui agreed that the next Malta-Tunisia Joint Commission meeting is to be held in Malta in the first quarter of 2018 in a bid to further deepen relations on several fronts. They also decided to explore the potential for further cooperation in the fields of diplomatic studies and culture, particularly in the light of Malta’s designation as European Capital of Culture for 2018. Malta will also collaborate with Tunisia in its efforts to forge closer relations with the European Union.

“Even though official diplomatic relations between our two countries began in 1967, our friendship goes even further back in history,” Minister Abela remarked. “Our high-level visits bear further testimony to the importance that Malta gives to closer collaboration with Tunisia. We look forward to further enhance and consolidate our bilateral relations in various sectors of mutual interest”.

On 7 November, the two foreign ministers also signed a bilateral Framework Convention in the field of education, as well as a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding to encourage and strengthen cooperation in the tourism sector.

Meanwhile, together with the Minister for the Economy, Investment and Small Business, Chris Cardona, Minister Abela exchanged views with Tunisia’s Minister of Commerce Omar Behi on concrete ways to further promote bilateral trade. He also attended a Business Forum that brought together entrepreneurs from Malta and Tunisia. The networking event was organised in a joint effort with Trade Malta and Malta Enterprise.
