Tunisia to host conference on China’s Belt and Road Initiative

Tunisia will host on April 10-11 a conference on “China’s Belt and Road Initiative: the Return of the Silk Road to the Mediterranean.”

The event is initiated by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS)’s Regional Programme South Mediterranean, in collaboration with consulting firm, Global Prospect Intelligence, KAS said in a press release.

This event, which will bring together Tunisian, Chinese, European and Maghreb experts, aims to enable a discussion of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a project still little known in Tunisia and the rest of North Africa, and the geopolitical and economic considerations behind this large-scale project.

Lecturers will look at ways for Tunisia, a country at the heart of the Mediterranean, to best position itself to benefit from the project, KAS further indicated.

A policy paper entitled “The new silk roads and North Africa: What are the synergies?” will be presented at this conference.

It is worth noting that BRI project aspires to resuscitate the old silk roads by connecting Asia, Europe, the Mediterranean and Africa while also extending to Oceania and Latin America through the construction of roads, railways, maritime and technology routes, oil and gas pipelines, as well as ports.

This colossal infrastructure project is valued at 5,000 billion USD and includes almost 65 countries with a total of 4.5 billion inhabitants, representing around 55% of the global GDP and 75% of worldwide energy resources.
