BCE says PM should quit if crisis continues

President Beji Caid Essebsi called on Sunday for Prime Minister Youssef Chahed to step down or seek a confidence vote if the country’s political and economic crisis persists.

Prime Minister Youssef Chahed must “move to change the situation and improve it,” Essebsi said on Nessma TV. “If that is not possible, then he must resign or to go to the parliament” for a vote of confidence, he said.

There is a difference between the parties and national organizations about the government, between government and key players like UGTT and some parties,” Essebsi said in an interview broadcast by local Nesma TV.

Ennahda party has said the exit of the prime minister would hit stability at a time when the country needed economic reforms.

Tunisia’s Annual inflation hit a record high of 7.8 % in June as the dinar currency tanked, making food imports more expensive.

Youth unemployment stands at about 30 per cent — double the overall national level. Foreign investments have yet to materialize, and foreign reserves cover only around 75 days of imports, according to the latest central bank figures. That’s about 4 days more than the previous figure and could reflect the arrival of the latest instalment of the International Monetary Fund’s $2.9 billion loans that the country secured in 2016.
