Five dead in heavy rainfall in Tunisia

A heavy rainfall killed five people in Nabeul province in northeast Tunisia, Tunisian Civil Protection Spokesman Moez Triaa toldmedia on Sunday. According to Triaa, the dead included two sisters and a 13-year-old child.

Most of the Tunisian territory suffered a heavy rainfall since Saturday morning, especially the province of Nabeul, where the maximum rainfall reached 197 millimeters, according to Tunisian National Meteorology Institute.

 Tunisian civil protection units and security forces helped 86 vehicles trapped on road and rescued a group of 25 Japanese tourists who were stranded near a beach area.
Prime Minister Youssef Chahed arrived Sunday afternoon in Nabeul to chair the meeting of the regional commission of fight against disasters, with attendance of Ministers of National Defence, Abdelkrim Zbidi, of Interior Affairs Hichem Fourati, of Local Affairs and the Environment Riadh Mouakhar and of Tourism and Handicrafts Selma Elloumi.

According to a liable source, Chahed insisted during the meeting on the imperative to ensure the social support of affected people and to give priority to the opening up of roads to allow pupils to return to their schools in the best conditions.

The prime minister paid a visit on Sunday morning to the city of Takelsa and took note of the damage caused by the latest rains and the intervention of the civil protection units, giving orders to step up efforts to find a missing elderly man in the region.
