Kais Saied officially wins presidential election

The Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) has officially announced the victory of Kais Saied in the runoff presidential election, after the expiry of the deadlines without filing an appeal before the administrative court and after having received an absolute majority of votes.

During a meeting with the press Thursday, ISIE president Nabil Baffoun said the results were definitive since no appeal had been made to contest them.

Kais Saied who ran for the presidential election as an independent candidate received 72.71% of the vote, while Nabil Karoui got 27.29%.

The 61-year-old Saied succeeds the late Beji Caid Essebsi, who died in office last July.

Parliament is expected to soon set a date for an extraordinary session during which the new president will be sworn in and formally start his five-year mandate.
