Code of Conduct needed to restore citizen’s confidence in politicians

I was shocked as many Tunisians when I heard the death threat voiced by MP Fayçal Tebini targeting Prime Minister Youssef Chahed if the latter takes the decision to sign the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA). Such threat lacks wisdom and responsibility and heightens worries within the political landscape in the deep crisis in which our country is going through. It is an unacceptable statement that shows us an example of the politically bankrupt’s level which arouses public anger and critic. In addition, what the deputy stated, certainly…

Viva Technology Fair in Paris: Tunisia is absent

Tunisia was conspicuous by its absence in the Viva Technology, the European digital show in its fourth edition, held from May 16 to 18, 2019 in Paris Porte de Versailles (France) and where more than 100,000 visitors are expected to discover more than 1,000 start-ups and hear 450 prestigious speakers. Tunisia could have shined with its new legislation, that we are all proud, the Startup Act. Tunisia could stand out like Morocco, Algeria or all African countries, being present with its National Strategic Plan “Digital Tunisia 2020” which focuses on…

Sidi Bouzid : Sebbala district calamity, Tunisia mourns “Nos Dames de Tunisie”

Not a week elapses without another disaster reminding the local people and the villagers of the sad fate that beset them. Several farm worker women, being transported to work on a farm in the back of a pickup, were killed when it collided with a minivan carrying poultry in the central region of Sidi Bouzid, last Saturday at dawn. The deaths triggered an outcry on social media, with users accusing farm owners of mistreating their low-paid, mainly female workforce. The obsolescence and precariousness of our legal, and illegal public transport…

More Schools and Fewer Tanks for the Mideast

Prominent columnist Thomas L. Friedman highlighted in his last article, published in new York Times “More Schools and Fewer Tanks for the Mideast“, the importance of schools pointing out that Tunisia – as a success model in Middle East- deserves help to continue its democratic transition in education. He concluded that “It’s time we focused on giving more Arabs and Iranians access to the ingredients that enabled Tunisia to transform itself by itself into a democracy without a single U.S. war fighter”. It is a significant recognition that Tunisia has succeeded to…

Freedom but not dignity after 8 years of revolution, Tunisia is still holding firm

The revolution staged eight years ago to oust dictatorship has managed to restore freedom but not dignity. While Tunisia has been praised as a model of democratic transition, wealth and control of the economy remain concentrated in the hands of a small elite despite economic growth. The revolution’s slogan was “work, dignity and freedom” but the first two were not achieved, unfortunately. We believe that many Tunisians have fallen into disproportionate freedom and that priority must first be given to socio-economic reforms and security, for a better quality of life,…

Tunisians still fear January

On the new year’s eve, eyes are turning towards the coming month of January which remains the month that Tunisian people fear. For decades it has represented to them a nightmare after they experienced painful and devastating events with the exacerbated tensions between various rivals. Successive governments and trade unions were unfortunately behind the previous black crises. Tunisian history retains the horror of these crises and their negative impacts on social peace, after the two sides failed to hold constructive discussions, to avoid resorting to force and growing of violence.…

EU looks at Morocco and Tunisia to offload migrants

Member states are pressing to get Morocco and Tunisia onto a list of so-called “safe third countries” on to which to offload people seeking asylum. The move appears linked to stalled plans for setting up centres in countries rimming the Mediterranean to take in disembarked rescued migrants at sea. The safe third country concept entails dispatching people, regardless of nationality, back to places where they initially transited through. It means, for instance, a sub-Saharan African who travelled through Morocco to reach Europe could be sent back to Morocco to have his asylum…

Time to stop wrangling in the new Tunisia !

Tunisia is the only Arab Spring country which has succeeded so far in its democratic transition. However, the current Tunisian political landscape does not really reflect this success. The most recent hot debates have shown how some Tunisian politicians, deemed to be key actors in this landscape, are  actually with unbearable manners and shallow analytical political depth precisely in relation to the deep  crisis our country is going through. Ironically, these politicians’ analyses and statements have remarkably become the source of public anger and critique. This is because their low-level and immoral…
